My Student:
Hey! Sorry for the short notice, I’d like to cancel my guitar lesson today, if that’s okay. I just don’t think I’ve gotten enough practice to be able to move forward quite yet.
Her Devoted Guitar Teacher:
Ah, trying to avoid that awkwardness that comes from slacking off, aye? It happens. You’re a bit late informing me, but I’ll let you off the hook. In the future, though, you can expect a lecture on how you need lesson even more when you haven’t practiced enough during the week. The discomfort of not being as prepared as you know you should be is strong motivation to up your game. The guitar is a stern taskmaster, and this is the sort of commitment it inevitably requires of us. Think on that this coming week, OK?
My Student:
I knooow, I’m sorry, I was totally lazy about it this week. I’ll crack down this week and really get on it.
Her Devoted Guitar Teacher:
There ya go, good lass. Part of my job is teaching you how to play, but there’s also the part about how to become a musician and not just a hobbyist. The choice of becoming one or the other is yours to make, but you can’t make it unless you first know the difference. Hang in there, you’re doing just fine.
