So wifey’s boss, who like me is a Star Trek fan, asked her to find out what my favorite series is, and why. I responded:
Good question. I especially enjoy the three later spin-offs: Enterprise, Deep Space 9, and Voyager. Since we don’t do network TV, I have no experience with The Orville, Discovery and Seth. The various feature films of the early Kirk and Spock days are delightful, as the CGI had evolved to such an astounding level by the time they hit the screen.
As for the early TV series, 1st and 2nd gen Star Treks were great, of course, but strike me as more narrowly developed than the spin-offs, which are much more multi-dimensional in the writing and acting.
It’s hard to pick a favorite series between them, so I’ll include all three spinners.
Star Trek: Enterprise because it’s a prequel to everything that followed (including the original), used CGI to best advantage, it’s fun to see the tech we take for granted later in the chronology (eg, replicators and beaming) being adapted to by the characters when they were unsure about them… and Jolene Blalock is such a hottie;
Deep Space 9 because it stretched the ethical and spiritual scope of the story lines and introduced long, serial plot-arches that really fleshed out the characters and tied together every episode… and Terry Farrell is such a hottie;
Voyager because she was the ultimate Starfleet vessel technologically, faced the greatest challenges with a ship and crew propelled 70+ light-years into a foreign and extremely hostile (home of the Borg) quadrant of the galaxy… and Jeri Ryan is such a hottie.
I’m sensing a common thread in my reasons for liking these three series… but damned if I can put a finger on it.
If you did put your finger on it, I’d wager that there would be trouble on the mountain….
