When I was just a lad and acquired my first little stereo system, I used to go to sleep at night with the radio tuned to WLW-Cincinnati. I just just couldn’t pump enough music through my young head, I guess. I had some interesting experiences with all-night music submersion, chronicled to some extend here.
This habit has revisited me at various times in my life, and for the past few years (with the advent of broadband and internet radio), I’ve taken to streaming The Drone Zone on SomaFM.com. I found it in the Ambient channel in the listings on iTunes.
For some folks, Ambient isn’t exactly what they’d call “music”, often entirely lacking rhythm and melody (but incredibly rich in harmonic structure)… but I personally love the stuff. Maybe it’s my predilection for meditative states, maybe it’s the minimalist structures (more like textures, I’d say), maybe it’s just that it helps quiet my racing brain enough to allow me to finally go to sleep at 4am. Or maybe I’m just weird (always an option, I find).
In any event, this article slides right up my auditory bailiwick. I rather enjoy the feeling….
Binaural Beats are the products of two different sounds in harmony; they produce sounds that are only heard by the brain. The effect of this can be quite calming, relaxing and meditative. There are many different types of binaural beats that can suit your specific mood and also help with various ailments. Many people have said that if you are someone who generally has trouble with quieting the mind and meditation (like me), then binaural beats are likely to have a greater affect on your overall ability to reach the higher frequency states. Furthermore, studies have shown that these beats can assist with mental clarity, more focused thought patterns, increased energy, heightened creativity and many more positive changes for your overall well-being.
