While living in California during the 90s, Jeff formed nuMonet in 1994 with singer/guitarist/songwriter Janet Baldwin and singer/keyboardist Jenny Butler. Their 1995 CD, Paint Me A Picture, featuring 15 original songs by the trio, was engineered and produced by the three musicians in Jeff’s studio. Jeff performed all MIDI sequencing (with the exception of Jenny’s piano) utilizing a custom-made Turner Renaissance MIDI-Classic guitar and a Roland GR-50 guitar synth.
A dynamic trio utilizing MIDI to generate the sound of a 6-piece band in performance, nuMonet eventually became a duo with the departure of Jenny Butler. Jeff and Janet (by then comfortable using twin MIDI-guitars in real-time, and dropping the use of sequencing in live performance) continued to travel extensively, from Mexico’s Cabo San Lucas area, up along the southern California coast and into Nevada, and all the way to the Grand Aleutian Hotel in Dutch Harbor, Alaska, where (after their gig at the Aleutian) they often jammed late into the night at one of Jimmy Buffett’s favorite dives, the famous Elbow Room, widely reputed to be the rowdiest bar in America (now closed down, in fact, for getting just a bit too rowdy).
The duo, despite their potential and momentum, eventually succumbed to typical (and some not so typical) pressures, and dissolved in the late 90s, paving the way for Jeff’s return to Indiana in May of 2000.
