Produced by Jeff Foser & Stan Garrison.
Stan Garrison and I first met in our hometown of Muncie, Indiana back in the late 60s, when we were still young men pursuing our individual studies of the guitar. Stan was a bit older and much better on guitar than I was, and graciously let the young grasshopper pick his brain.
Under Stan’s tutelage I quickly improved as a player. We continued to hang out as friends, and quickly recognized our convergent talents and interests, firmly rooted in traditional jazz and classical repertoire and technique. We formed a duo act to perform at local animal clubs and similar dives. Our early performances showcased the multi-instrumental skills on guitar, banjo (both 4 and 5 string), mandolin, mandola, fiddle and pedal steel for which we both were to become known.
After our initial collaborations, we went their separate ways for almost 30 years. While I went off to Bloomington, Indiana and eventually to California in pursuit of my muse, Stan remained in East Central Indiana, becoming a successful woodworker, luthier and businessman, and performing as an in-demand multi-instrumentalist in a wide variety of contexts. During this time we would meet socially on a few rare occasions to share road stories over cold beers, but the guitars were silent for the most part.
In 2000, I returned to Indiana, and looked up my old friend. We quickly found themselves enjoying once again the good camaraderie of our youth, both personally and musically. These jams are from an informal demo we recorded one day house.
UPDATE: Sadly, my old friend passed away in hospice on March 19, 2021. Born October 12, 1950, Stanley was 70 years of age.
