A lot of folks denigrate capitalism, blaming it for all our current (and seemingly intractable) financial problems. I’m inclined to think otherwise. As I see it, we have not had true capitalism in at least a century, so virtually no one alive can claim to have experienced it, much less be in a position to pass judgement upon it.
“Unbridled capitalism is no better than unbridled communism”, I’ve heard it said… and once believed that myself, I am sad to say. But my studies of economics (going on 6 years now since the crash of ’08) have caused me to rethink many of my old notions. So if we do not have true capitalism today, what the hell is it?
What we have had (at the very least since the creation of the Federal Reserve in 1913, with roots going further back than that) is a parasitic corporatism purposefully disguising itself as capitalism — serving the rich, depleting the wealth of those who actually work for a living, and promoting disdain for free markets based on the voluntary exchange of value for value, fueled by real individual productivity, which is the essence of capitalism.
We have been duped, and a noble system of fair interpersonal exchange (when left alone to seek its own equilibrium, a system that served the people for thousands of years) has been usurped and debased by men of evil intent into a system designed for the upward flow of wealth and the enslavement of those who produce. And all this has been done with the ultimate goal of manipulating public perception so that the idea of free markets and sound money should be condemned by the people, and a retreat to socialism and dependence on the State be widely encouraged as the preferred path, thus welding the chains of our enslavement.
