To be honest, I’ve been floored by the traffic StringDancer has been getting since the first of the year (see chart below). Several posts have garnered thousands of views, which is much more than my obscure little music endeavors ever attracted. Maybe I should have started mouthing off in earnest years ago, eh?
The upshot of such a spike in traffic is that StringDancer hit the ceiling of the hosting account I’ve had for the past several years (both in storage and bandwidth), forcing me to acquire a more robust hosting environment and begin the slow process of migrating over all the websites I manage for myself and others. On top of that, I came to realize that StringDancer’s database had become so bloated with old and current plugin data, the poor thing sorely needed a thorough housecleaning if it was to regain its health.
Back in November I went looking for a new domain name to point to the “Kraken News” page I was building in StringDancer. It was initially just a forwarding URL, but with all the traffic I’ve been getting (and cognitive of the schizoid aspect of trying to combine a musician’s website with a news aggregator and political blog), I decided to divide the content between two separate sites — StringDancer.com for my musical endeavors as originally intended, and KrakenNews.us as my First Amendment outreach. Sister sites, as it were.
I’ve spent the past two days doing little else except working through the migration. Once I had the clone of StringDancer loaded into the new site, I began the tedious task of selectively purging the database of over a decade of music content that has no place in a political blog (and even more time cleaning and optimizing the database tables), plus making up some fresh logos and whatnot. The sites are cross-linked in the top menus now, and you can easily surf between them to your heart’s content.
