Have Yourself A Merry Little Christmas – vintage Foster Jones

Scroll down to hear some vintage Foster Jones, with Frank Jones singing and Jeff Foster playing guitar, on a true Christmas classic, Have Yourself A Merry Little Christmas. This rendition was recorded in the Brown County Hour studio in December 2014 for Episode #33.

The tune was written by Hugh Martin and Ralph Blane, and introduced by Judy Garland in the 1944 MGM musical Meet Me in St. Louis. Frank Sinatra later recorded a version with modified lyrics. In 2007, ASCAP ranked “Have Yourself a Merry Little Christmas” the third most performed Christmas song, during the preceding five years, that had been written by ASCAP members. In 2004 it finished at #76 in AFI’s 100 Years…100 Songs rankings of the top tunes in American cinema.

And if you’d like to play along, here’s a PDF of the music I used to jam up our little rendition. It comes from a battered, long out-of-print copy of easy Christmas songs my mom gave me when I was taking guitar lessons as a boy. For 50 years I’ve pulled out the book to refresh my memory on these great Christmas songs we enjoy every year.
